Let’s do 2 truths and a lie. Spot the lie! 1) I really only have one pair of pants. 2) Due to the fact that I never owned a bicycle before this trip, I crashed my first day and totally got lost. Even after I started cycling, I carried the story of “I can’t” for the first few weeks. 3) The thing that I love about social media is the epic cycle touring community it’s facilitated. Generally, there are couples or solo riders out on their adventures, but connecting via social media has facilitated meet-ups, and the sharing of experiences. Instagram is one of the main reasons i felt comfortable taking on this journey. Seeing other people as living examples made me realize what’s possible. A shit. Italy was a series of heat, rain and hills. It was also a milestone, as it signified the beginning of the end. I remember one day in particular after leaving Ancona, where I was fighting my way up probably the 7th climb of the day. It was hot and I was reawakening my cycling legs after nearly a week off the bike. And it hit me. “I’m in Western Europe. I left from my friend Zoe’s apartment in Thailand and now I’m here.” I couldn’t believe how far I’d come. I couldn’t believe the end was so near. I was proud and sad at the same time. But it made me sink into the trip even more— I enjoyed the climbs, the rain, the solitude. I enjoyed not knowing where I was going to sleep and all the random encounters I had on the way. Last one from Croatia. This photo was taken in Paklenica National Park- a climbers heaven, but also a great getaway for hikers. I spent 3 days in the back country hiking, sleeping in cozy mountain huts and contemplating the next phase of my journey - Western Europe. It was the beginning of the end. A beautiful moment caught on the precipice of change.
